AEO for Ghost: make your site readable by AI search

If you publish on Ghost, you start near the top of the class. Ghost is one of the most AI-readable platforms out of the box. This is how to make the most of that, plus the couple of gotchas that can quietly hold a Ghost site back.

Why Ghost is excellent for AEO out of the box

Ghost was built for publishing, and it shows. Pages are server-rendered with clean, semantic HTML, so crawlers see your content immediately. Default themes inject Article, Organization and WebSite schema.org JSON-LD plus full Open Graph and Twitter cards through the theme head, it generates a sitemap.xml and robots.txt for you, hosting is fast, and HTTPS is standard. Most sites have to add structured data by hand. On Ghost, you usually start with it.

The Ghost gotchas to watch

1. Members-only and paywalled posts are invisible. If a post is gated behind a membership or paid tier, an AI crawler sees only the teaser, not the body, so it cannot quote or recommend the real content. Decide which posts you want AI to read and keep those public.

2. Custom themes can strip the good defaults. Ghost's built-in schema and meta come through the theme head helper. A heavily customized or older theme may omit it. Verify your live pages actually output the JSON-LD and meta you expect.

3. Thin excerpts and metadata. Auto-generated excerpts and missing meta descriptions make weak snippets. Write a clear custom excerpt and meta description for each post so engines have a clean summary to lift.

4. Crawler access. Ghost allows crawlers by default, but a host or proxy in front of your site can add rules. Confirm the AI bots (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended) are allowed. Check yours free, and see the AI crawler reference.

5. Thin tag and author pages. Archive pages can be just lists with no context. A short descriptive intro on key tag pages helps them stand on their own.

The Ghost AEO checklist

1. Keep the posts you want AI to read public, not members-only.
2. Verify your theme still outputs Article and Organization JSON-LD on live pages.
3. Write a custom excerpt and meta description per post.
4. Confirm AI crawlers are allowed in robots.txt.
5. Use clear question-style headings and direct answers in your posts.
6. Give important tag pages a short intro, and keep your canonical on your real domain.

What the data says

Across the 154 leading sites Oraql audited for our 2026 State of AI Search Readiness report, structured data was the single biggest weak spot, at just 37% of available points. Ghost largely solves that for you, which is a real head start. The remaining gains for most Ghost sites are keeping the right content public and writing genuinely answer-ready posts.
