Answer engines do not rank ten blue links — they read sources, then write one answer and cite a few of them. To be one of those citations, two things have to be true: an AI crawler can actually fetch and parse your page, and your content is the kind of clear, trustworthy source a model is comfortable quoting.
That is mostly concrete and technical. It is not about gaming a black box; it is about being genuinely machine-readable and credible.
Two paths matter. (1) Live retrieval: when ChatGPT (Search), Perplexity or Google AI answer a current question, they fetch pages in real time using crawlers like OpenAI's GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, Anthropic's ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended — so if your robots.txt blocks them, you are invisible by default. (2) Trusted sources: models lean on places they already trust — Wikipedia, Reddit, reputable industry publications — so being mentioned there feeds your brand into the answer even when your own site is not fetched.
1. Let the AI crawlers in. Allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended in robots.txt. The single most common own-goal is silently blocking them. Check yours with our free robots.txt checker →
2. Serve real HTML. If your content only appears after JavaScript runs, most AI crawlers see an empty page. Server-render the substance.
3. Make it extractable. Clear headings, FAQ-style Q and A, and schema.org JSON-LD so an engine can lift a clean, correct passage to quote.
4. Earn trusted mentions. Get cited where models already look — a helpful Reddit answer, a Wikipedia-grade reference, an industry post. This is the highest-leverage and slowest lever.
5. Keep it current and watch it. AI answers shift as engines and your site change; a robots rule or JS migration can make you vanish overnight, so re-check regularly.
There is no button that "ranks you #1 in ChatGPT," and anyone selling guaranteed placement is selling snake oil. Be skeptical of magic-bullet tactics — including over-hyped llms.txt claims (useful for AI coding agents, unproven for search citations). The durable work is the five fundamentals above, which also happen to be plain good technical SEO. For the deeper framework, see what Answer Engine Optimization is.
